Introduction to License Types

Zemax, LLC offers two types of licenses: Single User Licenses and Network Licenses.

Single User Licenses allow one machine and one user to access OpticStudio at a time. There's no limit to how many machines or users can run OpticStudio with this key, but only one machine and one user can use the key at a time, and the license must be transferred between machines in order to run OpticStudio on a different machine.

Network Licenses are installed & hosted on a single keyserver machine that client machines access. Network licenses allow multiple users/machines simultaneous access to OpticStudio.

Each of these licenses have several sub-types, which allow the user flexibility in how they would like to access the software. These sub-types are:
  • Softkey Licenses (Network and Single user)
  • Green USB Hardkey Licenses (Single User only)
  • Red USB Hardkey Licenses (Network and Single user)
  • Black USB Hardkey (Network and Single User)
Each of these sub-types are different, and have different installation, activation, transfer, and troubleshooting steps. Thus, it is very important for users to know which type of license they have!

NOTE: These instructions rely on having OpticStudio or Zemax License Manager installed and a working license. If you cannot access OpticStudio:
  1. Contact your system administrator to obtain your license details, or
  2. Contact Zemax Support at support@zemax.com; for Zemax Support to locate your license details. If you can, please provide your license key serial number.

Single User Red, Green or Black USB Key

First check all USB ports on your computer for a USB key, about the size of a USB thumb drive. These keys must be plugged into the machine which is using them. They look like the following examples:

Black USB keys have a 5 digit number. Green ones are typically not marked)
If the key itself does not have the license number printed on it, follow these steps:

1. Launch OpticStudio. Look at the window title bar. Make note of the 5-digit number or one like "L100000"
2. To confirm the type, Open the License Manager from the Help tab.

3a. If you have a Black USB key attached, it's number will be displayed at the bottom of the license manager screen.

3b. If you have a Red or Green USB license, you will find the key serial number starting with "L" that matches the number displayed in the title of OpticStudio. The “Product” field will contain "Standalone”, and the License Type is "Hardware".

For more information on Single User Red, Green or Black USB Key License, see the Directory Page for Single User Licenses.

Single User Softkey License

To check if you have this license type, first launch OpticStudio. At the top, first see if there is a 6 digit number starting with "L".  Make note of it.

To determine if this is a single user license, launch the Zemax License Manager from the "Help" Tab of OpticStudio.

Locate your license key serial number in the License Information Tab;

1. Ensure that the “Product:” field reads, “OpticStudio *** Standalone,” where “***” indicates your software edition. The license type should say "Local"
2. Record the listed “Key ID:” number;
3. Open a web browser and navigate to http://localhost:1947;

4. In the Sentinel Keys Tab, locate your Key ID;
5. If the Location is “Local” and the Key Type is “HASP SL AdminMode Rehostable,” for this key, you have a Single User Softkey license.

For more information on Single User Softkey Licenses, see the Directory Page for Single User Licenses.

Network Licenses

Network Black USB Hardkey License

To check if you have this license, first make sure that you do not have a Green, Red or Black USB License plugged into your machine. Assuming this is true, launch OpticStudio and look at the window title bar. If you have a 5-digit number listed here, you have a Network Black USB Hardkey (this number is your key serial number).

For more information on Network Black USB Hardkey Licenses, see the Directory Page for Network Licenses.

5. Open a web browser and navigate to http://localhost:1947.
